How bad having a "yearback" or a "drop" can be from your placements point of view ?
The title of the article is self explanatory and I need not to explain anything. With the craze of Joint Entrance Exam for IIT's many people take one year drop to either go to Kota or joins some other coaching institute. Fine uptill here...
Now you may or may not get succeed in cracking JEE with good rank but when sitting for placements, this thing will always haunt you that what will you say if the interviewer asks you why there is a gap of one year in your academics ? From my expereince, I feels we can divide all the companies into two categories,
One, the big MNC's whom I feels are bothered not at all of any kind of "yearback" in your studies. Even if they ask you than you can safely say that you were preparing for JEE and that's it. No further questions will be asked and I don't think so that this will give any negative impression.
But than there are companies like Infosys,TCS,Wipro and Satyam which are very particular about this and they ask you to fill a form about gap in studies and you may also get rejected on this ground. Kind of silly as they hire combined 20,000 per year and than rejecting a good candidate on the grounds that he has a drop! Come on, it's not that difficult to find a better elimination criteria.
Anyway so if you have gap in studies, DO FOLLOW these things -
1. NEVER...I repeat, never mention this in your resume about your gap. No need of writing when you passed your higher secondary(12th) as well. No need of writing your birth year as well(if you feels it can create suspicion in recruiters eyes).
2. Be prepared for the questions and with proper answer and explaination.
3. There is no need to tell lies, just hide some information which can go against you. Do not start telling nonsense stories, you will be harming your chances seriously.
4. Let's be just realistic, you can not do much if the recruiter has decided to not to take you on the grounds of a year gap. If you are good than you can easily make into other companies.
As usual comments are invited as I want to know what other thinks about the issue,

Re: How bad having a "yearback" or a "drop" can be from your pla
thanks for the help.....
i m 1 yr dropper frm kota....but didnt get in iits..also not a gud rank in aieee so is there any problem in future being a 2nd year dropper.
Re: How bad having a "yearback" or a "drop" can be from your pla
Well there is nothing wrong in taking a second drop if you are not getting any good college say any NIT through AIEEE. Although the better thing would have been to join any good college through AIEEE and than study for JEE.
Companies do not take care much about yearbacks if you are good enough :)
Best of Luck for your JEE and AIEEE attempts
Re: How bad having a "yearback" or a "drop" can be from your pla
what happens if a student gets yearback during his engineering career that means in first year ,will he be able to sit for the campus(on campus)..what he should try to improve to be eligible..
Re: How bad having a "yearback" or a "drop" can be from your pla
Good Questions, The answer is...
There are two kind of companies that exist in India. One is TCS, Infosys, IBM who take such things very seriously about this. Say a person joins a college in 2003 and passing out in 2008 than in your degree and record sheet this will certainly be written. They may ask you questions like what happened in that year ? If that case comes, than give a good reason like you were preparing for IIT-JEE. Although during campus placements, no one has time to go through your records and once you get selected(which happens on the same day itself), no one cares if you have done your 4 year engineering in 5 years :) but yes, for trying off campus there are good chances that this question will be asked.
By the way,try to avoid year of passing 12th and getting your engineering if there is a gap of more than 4 years.
Than there are other Big MNC's who take a candidate on purely merit and don't care much about 1 year yearback though still you should try to avoid mentioning any such thing in interview. If they ask, tell them confidently and honestly(even if you are lying) :)
Re: How bad having a "yearback" or a "drop" can be from your pla
Hi,
I know this will sound absolutely disgusting.. but i managed to complete my btech only this year although i finished school in 1998. from 98 up till 2000(at 17) i was trying to get into med school. AT 19 (2002) I moved here to delhi and got into a prep college for engg entrace. Here I managed to get into engg coll at 20 in 2003.But i'm now lookin for jobs and I'm afraid of showing my age. The above ans would really be great if i can hide both my birth date and school pass out year. But still... do you think it's realy possible i'll get a decent job with a decent firm that doesn't mind this huge gap???ANd you really thnk they won't ask what my age or pass out year is??
I know i sound as scared as a loser. It shows, and i'm ashamed but...please
Do answer this.
Re: How bad having a "yearback" or a "drop" can be from your pla
@Firegal - Don't be so hard on yourself. I know people at the age of 26 who have finished there graduation as they had wasted 3-4 years in Kota/Delhi. You can always say that you were looking to do medical and than later changed your mind. What is your branch by the way ? CSE ?
Let me tell you what the reality is. Companies do keep 25 as maximum age limit(I know infosys does, others too must be having it) so you are out in the race for such companies. But than there are tons of smaller companies who are looking for hardworking people and will not consider age as a criteria for selection. If you are still in Delhi, than start looking for them. Start with a smaller one, Get a 1 year of experience than it will be very easier to move to a better job. Register to Monster/Naukri/Timesjobs Now! Also try to get in touch with jobs consultants.
If someone ask the huge age gap, tell them honestly just like you did here. You can't do anything about it now so stop feeling bad about it and do well from now on in your life. Remember "Today is the first day of the rest of your life" (American Beauty) :)
Best of Luck. If you need something, some guidance or any help than feel free to ask me.

hi,
i did my 12th in 2002 den dropped for jee...but could'nt get through not even aieee...got a rank in eamcet but was not good enough...so i joined B.Sc(PCM) 2003-2006 and then got seat in an MCA college.....i'm afraid if in placements they ask me about my yearback..How can i handle such situation..??
Re: How bad having a "yearback" or a "drop" can be from your pla
Don't worry about one year's drop. This is fairly normal and everyone understands it. In camput placements, if you are good, than you are good. They will take you on the merit. :)
